To make the best of your efforts to find the real cost of painless dent repair hail damage on your vehicle you will need to be very diligent to count each dent on all the panels that were struck by the hail damage.
Tips to see the dents:
Overcast is your best bet if you don’t have some soft white lighting like the body shops have. Just make sure you look at your vehicle when it’s not to bright and not to dim as you will miss many dents on your dent count thus rendering your estimate very inaccurate.
Clean your vehicle as best as possible. There is no way that you are going to see all the dents with a dirty car, even if you have proper lighting.
The angle is by far the most important thing to properly seeing the dents. You would think that if you looked at your vehicles panels head on you would be able to see the dents but in-fact you cannot see even larger dents if you look straight on, instead you must look at the dents on a 45 degree angle to be able to see them. Choose some kind of reflection on the background to see the distortions in the light inside the panel’s reflection to get a better count.
The Lighting, we touched on this first but we cant stress how important this is when it comes to truly counting your hail dents. Place your light about 3 feet away from the dent and try to get an angle of 45 degrees pointing towards the panel you are trying to see. Then stand back from it another 2-3 feet and try to look at the reflection the light is making on the panel at about a 45 degree angle as well. You should see waves and dents spearing magically in your line of sight and just move around and move your head to get a proper angle at all the dents. You might have to move your light source multiple times to see the full panel. You can do this with the clouds and things in the reflection but it’s easier with a nice soft light that a florescent light would produce.
